Dial-Up Faq's
Every time someone calls while I am on the Internet, I get disconnected.

This may be caused if you call waiting on the phoneline. To disable call waiting put *70 in front of the ISP phone number. This will disable call waiting only while you are on the internet.

When I try to dial onto the internet, I get a "No Dial Tone" error.

If you have an answering service on your phone line, often when a message is waiting, you will get a broken dial tone.

Most dialup modems have two telephone ports on the back. One is usually labelled "Line" or has a picture of a telephone jack. This plug should be connected to your wall jack. The other port is usually labelled "Phone" or has a picture of a handset. This plug should be empty, or it can be used as a pass through for a phone or fax machine.

I have a 56k modem, and never get connection speeds above 33.6 kbps.

If you are experiencing lower-than-expected connection rates, the first thing to try is to disconnect all other telephones and appliances from your telephone jacks except for your modem and to try connecting again, watching for any shift in speed. On a short phone service with a V.90 modem, you can expect to see connections between 42 and 48 kbps. Anything higher shows that you have an excellent line, and anything lower could indicate there is a problem somewhere in the phone line or internal wiring.

You may need to update the modem firmware (operating software) by visiting the manufacturer's web site and downloading the appropriate update patches. If you are using a modem that does not have the V.90 standard compliant firmware, this is most likely the problem, although in some rural areas the phone company's equipment may not allow for digital connections, which are necessary for any speed above 33.6 kbps.

My high-speed internet connection has stopped working.

Sometimes electronic equipment such as modems and routers can "freeze up", resulting in it not passing information to the internet correctly. Start by unplugging the power to your DSL modem or wireless unit and plugging it back in. Give it approximately 2 minutes to reestablish a connection. Then if you are using a router or hub, reset the power on it as well. If your internet connection is still not working at that point, you may also need to reboot the computer for it to recognize the connection is back up. This solution is often necessary after an electrical storm or if there has been any sort of interruption of your home electricity.

I am getting an invalid username and password error.

Delete the username and password, and type both back in. (username and passwords are case sensitive). Click above on your operating system to see the proper format for your username.

E-mail Faq's

When I check my e-mail, I get a "Connection to server has failed" message, or "Server not found".

First, restart the computer to make sure it is not a problem with Windows. If that does not resolve the problem you may be having a problem with your antivirus software. Try opening your antivirus program and locate the options that affect email. Turn off email scanning and see if your emails can come in now. If they can it's possible that when you turn email scanning back on, it will have reset the the email scanning portion of your antivirus and everything will work fine.

If you are still unable to check email, it is possible that a virus has got past your antivirus software and is causing problems with it and your email. To make sure you don't have a virus, go to http://housecall.antivirus.com to get a free virus scan. Follow the instructions on the site and select to scan "My Computer" if any viruses are found, they will likely have damaged your antivirus software after the virus has been removed to resolve this issue.

How do I download files?

If you want to download and work with a specific file, treat it just as you would if you were copying it from a floppy disk. You'll need the space to save it, and the correct software to view whatever kind of file it is. You can save that file to your hard disk or a floppy disk, depending on your need.

Most of the time, if a file has been specifically made available for download, when you click the appropriate link, the download happens automatically. Your browser will prompt you to choose a place to save the file (don't forget where you put it!) and that's it. As far as what file format it is, it could be anything from a .tat file (the file type for basic text documents) to a .Tar file (an obscure UNIX compression file type).

If you are downloading AXE files or ZIP files with Axe's in them, you will want to get yourself virus scanning software - either that or ensure that you only download from reputable sources like www.shareware.com .

Once your download is complete, you need to view or execute the file you downloaded. The easiest way is to use the find files option. Just type in the name of the file you downloaded and when it appears in the list, double click it. If its an EXE file it will start automatically, if its ZIP and you previously downloaded "WinZip" (see below) it will start automatically. Some times the program or file will not work - be sure that you have the necessary software to use the file already on your computer, for example, if you downloaded an MDB file but don't have Microsoft Access, the file would be useless to you.

How do I unzip a file?
You can tell a Zip file from its extension: .zip (e.g., "thisprogram.zip.") The .zip part means the file was compressed by a popular PC shareware compression program called PKZIP. Zipping shrinks most files to about half their original size. The smaller the file, the quicker it takes to download.

So what do you do with a zipped file? Unzip it, of course. There are stand alone programs that handle all your zipping/unzipping needs. Take a look at www.shareware.com and search for WinZip if you are using Windows. If you are using a Mac, you'll be more interested in StuffIt and files with the Stuffed name of " .sit ".

Browsing FAQ's

I'm getting a lot of popup windows when I browse the Internet.

Many of these popups are part of the website you are viewing and have intentionally been placed there by the website operator. However, sometimes your computer could have a program known as adware or spyware installed on it. This can cause advertisements to appear on all sites. There are tools on the internet that can help remove these types of programs. One is called "AD-AWARE" and can be downloaded at:

http://www.ad-aware.com (AD-AWARE)

Another one is called "Spybot Search and Destroy" and can be found at:

http://security.kolla.de (Spybot Search and Destroy)

Both these tools can be very helpful in resolving this problem, but be sure to read the documentation for each program, as there can be some side effects to using these programs, and they are issues we may not be able to assist you with at the technical support office.

How do I disable ActiveX Controls?

A number of ActiveX controls have begun to flood across the Internet that pose serious security risks to users. These controls can be used by unscrupulous individuals to utilize "social engineering" or trickery to fool users into having harmful software on their computer.

Concurrently, PCs the world over are being hit by a new breed of software known as a dialer. These programs are far more malicious than spyware, which merely keeps a record of your online behavior. Dialers use your modem surreptitiously to dial long distance telephone numbers, running up enormous charges on your phone bill. Some operate while you're surfing the Web, dropping your dial-up connection and reconnecting you through a new number. Others operate when you're away from your machine, dialing numbers after the system sits idle for long periods of time. These charges then become your burden, sometimes at astronomical costs.

Disabling ActiveX Controls is the best way to avoid such hazards.

Hotmail users take note-Disabling ActiveX controls totally will cause some site functionality to not display properly. To avoid this, try setting them to "Prompt" by following the instructions below.

To Disable ActiveX Controls in Internet Explorer:

1) Double Click on Internet Explorer to open it.

2) Go to Tools at the top, then Internet Options.

3) Click on the Security tab.

4) Highlight the Internet "Globe" icon, then click the Custom Level button.

5) From there, change the ActiveX related options to either Disable, or Prompt-which will safeguard you against them running automatically.
